Playground Leaders

Our playground is more than just a place to burn off energy—it’s a space for friendship, inclusion, and active play. Our Playground Leaders are the driving force behind this mission, dedicated to ensuring that every break and lunchtime is positive and engaging for everyone.

Leading by Example

The role of a Playground Leader is a prestigious position of responsibility reserved for our Year 5 and Year 6 students. Unlike our elected Council, these leaders undergo a formal application process, demonstrating their commitment to being role models for the rest of the school.

What Our Leaders Do

Our leaders are easy to spot on the playground, usually found in the thick of the action or offering a helping hand. Their responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating Activities: Organizing and leading games—from traditional skipping-rope challenges to games of tag—ensuring no one feels left out.
  • Peer Mediation: Acting as a friendly first point of contact to help classmates resolve minor disagreements fairly and calmly.
  • Equipment Management: Making sure our play resources are used safely and tidied away properly.
  • Mentorship: Supporting our younger pupils in Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2, helping them build confidence and learn new social skills.

To prepare for their roles, our Year 5 and 6 volunteers receive special training. This coaching focuses on:

  1. Communication: How to give clear instructions and listen effectively.
  2. Conflict Resolution: Learning the "peer mediation" techniques needed to help friends find a middle ground.
  3. Safety & Inclusion: Ensuring games are safe for all ages and adapted so everyone can join in the fun.

Through this program, our playground leaders develop vital life skills like empathy, organisation, and resilience, while making our school grounds a happier place for all.
