Oracy

At Lift St Helen's, oracy is at the heart of our curriculum. By teaching children to talk and through talk, we empower our pupils to find their voices, articulate their ideas, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

At Lift St Helen's oracy is a crucial part of the children’s learning journey through our school. We use Voice21's evidence-based frameworks to plan high quality oracy opportunites throughout the curriculum. The Oracy Framework is used by teachers to plan opportunities for pupils to develop the physical, linguistic, cognitive and social skills that enable them to have successful discussions and become effective communicators.

Children from EYFS to Year 6 created their own “Discussion Guidelines” with their class and refer back to these when holding group or whole class discussions. Pupils also use their “Talk Tactics” to support them with instigating and summarising discussions as well as challenging their peers’ ideas.

Every week, oracy skills are taught discretely through Votes4Schools sessions providing pupils with opportunities to learn to talk and to learn through talk.

Communication doesn't stop at the classroom door. We provide enrichment activities and our weekly “Talk on Tuesday” prompts. These are shared with families to encourage lively discussion at the dinner table, ensuring that oracy remains a shared priority between school and home.
